what is your base timing set at?
Hey guy's, my base timing is at 24 degrees base and 38 total, is this normal? I have msd everything. sportsman 351 shortblock with 9.0:1 comp, trickflow track heat heads, trickflow stage two cam,(roller block) 750dp holley, rpm airgap intake, tremec 3550 trans,4.10 gears with 31 spline truck carrier.
The reason i ask this is because i am about to install a NX nitrous system set at 150 shot and i want the timing to be right. What should i start at with total timing, and where should my base be? Sorry for the question but i'm new to the nitrous scene.
Thanks
Ryan

Hey Ryan,
24 degrees base timing doesn't make sense to me. Do you have an MSD distributor as well? Does your distributor have a vaccum advance on it? If so, make sure you have disconnected and plugthe vaccum line to the distributor when checking your base timing if you haven't already done so. This will be your true base timing. Also, ensure that you have the vaccum advance line ishooked up to the "Timed" vaccum port on the primary metering block of your Holley, and not the full manifold vaccum port on the base of the carb. Your ride will run much better on the "Timed" port, as it will gradually raise the vaccum signal to the distributor as you open the throttle. 38degrees full advance doesn't sound outrageous, but at what rpm does the ignition reach full advance. I attached a link to a good timing article below, hope it helps if you haven't already seen it.

I have the MSD billet distributer, mechanical advance and it is at full advance by 3300 rpm. i'm thinking that there is something wrong with the distributer like maybe its sticking but i'm not quite sure at this time. When it gets warmer outside i am going to tear it apart, if i have to get a new one then i will. I think i'm going to investigate the timing pointer as well. I think there were two different positions for different years so i will look into what clocked position i need for the 95' block. I really think it's my distributer though.
I think this because i have the smallest advance bushing in it and i get only 6 to 8 degrees out of the entire advance.
