timing cover interference

timing cover interference
While finishing up my engine build I remembered that I need a shortshaft water pump, so then I also needed my other timing cover. Not a big deal. But now I found out that the 94 timing cover wont fit with the timing set properly. I cant remember what brand the timing set is exactly (got it in spring). It was the one recommended by the cam maker. The tab that sticks out hits the bolt hole castings on the timing cover (can see in pictures). Any suggestions on a solution to this? I dont suppose they make a shorter water pump for the 351w timing cover?

RE: timing cover interference
another question is what is that tab for anyways. Seems like it shouldnt be there in the first place. Came on the shortblock when delivered. But kinda seems useless unless its to offset balance or something like that. None of my other engines had that on it.

RE: timing cover interference
hell thats not even right for a mechanical fuel pump, those used a round one and some were 2 piece round ones. take it off, chop the piece off that sticks up and reinstall. you want the "washer" part of it installed, it keeps the cam dowl pin from being able to come out and acts as a washer for the cam bolt.
