swap 2.3l for 351m
I have done a lot of research and cant seem to find much information on the 351m engines. I've learned a lot on the 351w engines, but not much on the modifieds. Right now my '90 mustang LX needs a new engine and tranny - both are not running, and are beyond repair. I have read that the 351m is not a good engine to put into a mustang, but there are a bunch of threads on trucks having amazing luck with horsepower.
I also found that I need a oil pan, and custom headers for the 351m to fit into the '90 mustang LX. The 351m comes with a C6 Tranny, and driveshaft(all three were free), and have 43,000miles on them.So right now im looking to put the 351m, c6 tranny into my mustang which has a 2.3l and automatic tranny.
I know the K-member will work with the 351m, but i need new motor mounts, tranny mounts. Does anyone have any links or know of parts that are interchangable from the 351m to 351w if any? Any other things I need for doing this swap? and i know the 351m has approx. 150hp, but with a new carb, and adjusting timing, ignition - i should be able to push taht up a little ? I am only looking for 200-250hp. Can i swap cleveland heads onto the block and will that improve the power ?
thanks - any information is helpful. I just want my mustang to run again.

RE: swap 2.3l for 351m
hey wats up man...i was actually tryin to do this same swap...i thought wat i had bouhgt was a windsor and was ready to drop it in my 89 coupe..but then when i start to work on it i noticed the c4 i bought was way to small for it and noticed some other things that made me realize i had 351m...but i ended up re saling it and gettin a nice 351w...but i went ahead and tried to drop it in and see how itd fit and clearance was etc..and there is not much room at all...and from wat i have heard and feedback i got on it ill end spending just as much in a few parts as i would for a 351w...and the M's are way heavier too..and when i had mine in just still hangin from the hoist i couldnt see how custom headers would even fit with out doin some major engine bay fab....but theres a lot of trucks and broncos out there with some dope *** Ms..and i think it could run realyl good in a stand with a lotttt of work and money put into it..but i dont have a lot of cash to play with.....but if u got some cash and some good tools and watnot id say go for it..but im no expert...heres a few links ive found when iwas tryin to do the swap..and also check bronco and ford truck forums..that migth be able to help...so for the long *** essay haha

RE: swap 2.3l for 351m
well i have the tools, but the cash is getting limited because I will be starting college in july/august, so money is going to be very small. any idea how much a 351m is worth, how much i could sell it for, and any idea how much a 351w is ? Right now its a copmlete engine, and I would like to find a 351w or even a 302 that i could put into the mustang. The 351m has very low miles, so would that help with price at all?
and wheres a good place to find a cheap/good 302 or 351w block?
thanks

well i the 351m i got out a 79 f100 i sold the truck and the motor and tranny for 500 bucks...the truck was a junkier tho but it ran good as hell with the motor..and the guy who bought it had the same year truck and just wanted it for parts so i dunno if i just got lucky or wat...but i would guess u could proly get around 300-600 since it has low miles...and i found my windsor on craiglist...so check ur local craigslist theres always a lot of people selling 302..and 351s and othre mustang parts too..thas prolly ur best bet cuz u can find people near by so u want have to get it crated and shiped and all that u just gotta go get it..if ur near the St.louis area theres a coupl people selling complete runnin 302s and 351w blocks..so just check it out..and ebay..u never know u migth luck out and find one close to u

Why are trying to bother with such a crappy motor. [:'(]Youcan pick up a 302 out of a mountineer or exploder for around $600 and thats intake to oil pan. All you would need is a wire harness from a GT and a computer and you could probably even make it fuel infected.

RE: swap 2.3l for 351m
I would love to find a 302 or 351w carb ... i hate fuel injected, and the reason i was going to try this engine (351m) is because its in my garage - was out of a '79 ranger, and runs great. the mustang needs an engine, and tranny to run.

RE: swap 2.3l for 351m
lol, 351m is basically a big block. Making 150hp SUCKS. Find any kind of 87 up 5.0 HO(or explorer) efi motor, and then change the lower intake, and put a carb on it and u should see about 235 easy. Lot less weight, no money spent in special parts, any AOD will fit, they were in all kinds of cars, and u have overdrive. They can be built to be pretty stout. You're asking for headaches with that modified
