Embarassing oil filter change question....
I've been reading in some of the posts that many Mustang owners are changing their oil filters in between actual oil changes. I'd like to do this but I've never removed an oil filter without first draining the oil. When I do this will I get a lot of oil spilling out since the crank case is still full? Thanks!

First off why?.....if your using a quality oil filter why would you change it between oil changes? And to answer your question, you'll get some oil but it shouldn't be alot - maybe a quart!

+1. No point to changing filters between oil changes. Unless you want some kind of super-enhanced filter for racing or something (if there even is such a thing), but if you're just driving your Mustang around town in a normal fashion, just change filters when you change oil (every 3 months or so will keep things happy.)

RE: Embarassing oil filter change question....
Thanks everyone. I thought it was a little strange changing the filter only myself. I've read other threads where it was said that synthetic oil (which I use) can last upwards of 10k miles but the filters need to be changed well before then. I think I'll just stick to the "normal" schedule of oil\filter change every 5K miles or so.

RE: Embarassing oil filter change question....
I have a Honda Civic. Its manual suggests change oil every 10,000 miles and change oil filter every 20,000 miles. It means one time we change oil only and next time change both oil and oil filter. I also read in a newspaper, if we change oil only and don't change oil filter, we will have half a quart of dirty oil in the car. So, I make up my mind, CHANGE BOTH OIL and OIL FILTER at the same time, either at 3000 milesfor conventionaloilor 5000 miles for full synthetic oil.
