Default Gears and T-Lock

Now that I'm pretty much set with what I want for the exterior of my car, I was looking around at some different driveterrain things and came across gearing. So naturally, I have a few questions. I just want to be able to get up to 60mph quicker, I'm not interested in top speed at all. I intend on taking my car to do some quarter mile runs for fun too.

T-Lok: Do our cars really only have power to 1 wheel? Would this be a good little mod for better acceleration?

3.73 gears: How about these? Tune required???

I know about CAIs and tuners, I'm just looking at better gearing right now, and if $430 towards gears would yield better results for what I want than a CAI and Tune for $500-$600

Thanks alot for any help.

1) run a search. I see dozens of "tlok and gear" threads every week

2)yes the 4.0s come with an open differential. aka power to one wheel

3) 3.73s are great, i have them, i love them. There is a user adjustable parameter on your handheld tuner that will let you select your gear ratio once you change them. Very simple.

4) CAI and Tuner 1st. you will need the tuner to change your speedometer when you get new gears

good advice ^^^^

I will add that Tlock and gear install is NOT a DIY job, even for the best wrench turners. You will need to take it to a shop and the install will cost 300-700 so it is pricey. Also you will want to install tlock and gears at the same time because it will not effect the install price.... you will just have to pay twice if you do it in 2 steps.

since parts+install is pricey, do you guys think it is worth it to purchase a GT takeoff rear axle assembly that already comes with 3.73's, LSD and 8.8? would a new driveshaft also need to be purchased or will the stock sixr DS work?

You could upgrade to the 8.8 rear, but it would still take some work to install.

CAI and tuner... = big wow

3.73 and t-lok... = icing on the cake.

They are both totally worth it.

Having a t-lok makes a big difference.. and the gears gives the car a really nice kick in the butt.

If you did both of them at the same time.. It would be like stepping into a totally different car.

The only reason i put in a 7.5 tlok and gears is because i got them used for $120 and installed them myself. Had i not gotten such a good deal, i would have bought an 8.8 take off rear end and put that in myself instead of paying for $450 for everything plus $400 for install.

If you buy an 8.8, its not too hard to install , there are a few guides out there to help you

I know that NewTakeOff came out with an 8.8 rear end, that will bolt right up to a V6. I think they put a different pionion flange on.

1.) you need a tuner to correct the speedo for gears, so i would get the CAI/tuner combo first

2.) they give power to both wheels, until one wheel looses traction then all of the power goes to the wheel with the LEAST traction

3.) 3.73s are good for turbos and roots blowers, otherwise, sacrifise the extra 1 mpg and get 4.10s,

4.) the FFRP tlok is about as strong as the open diff in your car right now, i have blown mine up on stock power (and im a 3.8 but rear end is the same) and an auto, they are junk, if you plan on driving it hard, like you should be, i would recomend a detroit true trac or an eaton LSD as they are clutchless LSDs and are stronger then the trash lock
