Default Temperature Gauge Issue

Hey guys, I'm Evan. I've had an 05 V6 Mustang for almost 5 months now, and it's been relatively problem free. I joined this forum back in February when I got the car and have read enough posts to know this is a great resource for when I have any issues with the vehicle. That was confirmed for me when my Thermostat housing cracked a few months ago and I used the information on this board to pinpoint the problem and fix it.

Lately I've been experiencing a strange problem with the Temperature Gauge. A lot of the time the needle won't go all the way up to the normal operating level even though the engine really is. Sometimes it gets stuck right above Cold, or doesn't move at all. And within the last few days, the needle hasn't been going back down to Cold all the way when I turn off the car, AND it's been moving around sporadically while the car is on.

I'm not entirely sure what the cause of this problem is, but it doesn't seem to be effecting the performance of the car whatsoever, it's just annoying. Any ideas?

The stepper motors in the cluster are prone to failure, especially in the 05's and some '06s.

+1, its not a matter of if they die in the 2005's/06's but its when they will die! I had all of mine either die or malfunction where I replaced the whole gauge cluster!

Well that solves that. Thanks for your help guys. I'll see if I can take care of it when I come back from vacation.
