What about manually shifting starting in 1st to 2nd to "D" in an automatic? lol
That would give the automatic tranny driver the 5,500 RPM advantage that you speak of during take-off
Just a question, lol.
you can do that, the tranny (4R70?) is programed to do that, for example, if you have ever done it it holds second gear and shifts alot firmer.

In addition, automatics offer greater convenience, particuarly for those who prefer to steer a car rather than drive it. Seriously, if I had to make a downtown commute through heavy traffic on a daily basis, I'd prefer to drive an automatic. But then that's what my auto-equipped Taurus is for...

To summarize: All those of you driving automatic-equipped Mustangs should just grab the nearest Wakizashi and disembowel yourselves immediately, for you now know The Truth: YOU ARE NOT WORTHY!!![:'(]
I think anyone that tools around town in a ford taurus that's not an SHO should also disembowel themselves.

you must be crazy my automatic hit's 200 rpm over the redline and bounces off it twice then grabs 2nd gear and drops down to 4800 rpm and im gone.. i do have gears and diablo tune and i think the person who owned it before me set shift points. my car shift's harder than any 5 speed mustang i have been in so far. and yes i do chirp from 1st to 2nd and i have chriped on rare ocassion 2nd to 3rd.

Check this site:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/

Yes it's a fuel econony site which doesn't seem to answer a performance question.. but if you notice compare most any car auto-to-manual tranny and you'll find the manual gives better fuel economy BECAUSE it doesn't rob as much engine power as does the automatic tranny. So,,, means more power available for the rear wheels.

And yes to answer the 1st question,, auto transmissions are heavier than manual ones but I don't know by how much
