Default short in the brake wire of my 98

recently i have been having problems where my car wont shift out of park. my step dad who is a mechanic said its the wire that signals my brake lights when i push the brake. the wire connects pretty much directly to the brake and the wire keeps shorting and buring and disconnects the wire. so we strip the wire and reconnect it. about a month later it does it again. this has happened to me about 5 times in less thena year and what sucks is if im out somewhere my car is stuck in park cuz with no brake lights it wont let me shift out of park. does anyone know what might be causing this to happen? thanks!!
