well ............ the silver wire.....is dat in the headlight switch itself?

what yr stang?nevermind read your info

I have an 01 and i tapped my on/off with headlights from a blue/white wire i believe off the headlight switch
yeah the gray wire in in the headlight switch. heres the directions i used

http://www.mustangtuning.com/mustang-gauges-how-to.htm

at the bottom is the stage im at but it seems that its not working. i almost seems like the lights don't shine through the gauges cause i can see the light in the gauge cluster on. i figure regardless it should light them up white and then when i connect the power inverter than would just control the colors, right? idk but its starting to **** me off.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok well since i KNOW for sure you have an 01 and i have an 01 and i did test lights pokes to figure out which wire to use and i used a blue/white wire i think thats your issue.

if you have a test light remove the cluster and test the power on the grey wire......if u have power when lights r on your good if not then theres your issue.

They say to tap the grey wire but not all wiring are the same throughout the yrs but on their pics i do see a blue/white wire

cant hurt to move the power to the blue/white wire...would be a quick fix

i found out what it was and fixed it. one of the quick splices did not make a connection and had the gray wire not even cut. it was thick and i just crimped it tighter. finally worked. i used the gray wire cause i was told that if i use that one it will work just as the stock gauges and won't need the car turned into the on position to run just if i turn the headlights on like before. so i figured it out. thanks guys for helping me out. i appreciate it.
