Default Multiple ?'s

In two weeks I am going to be buying me a 2001+ GT 5-speed. Anyways my friends dad owns a 2 door G35 coupe and he wants to race me from a dig. Do I stand a chance while I am still stock or not? (I don't drive sticks much and his dad is going to be the one racing me and he will have a manumatic) He will not race me I add any mods so I will have to race my while I am still stock. Also this same friend knows a kid that has a 2001 GT that is going to be taking out his 4.10's because he says they ruin his gas mileage (he has an auto). He's willing to sell them to me for really cheap but I don't know how hard the car has been driven or how many miles they have been on the car (never fixed the speedo). I know the kid did not drive it very hard because he says he is afraid of the car but I don't know how it was driven before he bought it. So my question is should I just forget about them and by 4.30's next week or do think it would be worth saving a $100 and getting some unknown used gears. I am thinking that maybe I should just get new ones but I thought I would ask for an opinion first. Thanks for all the help.

stock for stock i would give you the edge against the manumatic, i beat a six speed when i only had cat-back/filter.

your friend is a moron for getting rid of the 4.10's. i say just buy new ones.

1st. If you rarely drive a manual, drive the stang around for a couple of days to get used to the clutch so when you race him you will not be buying a new one.
2nd. It is going to take more than two days of driving (unless you drive a ton) to get fully used to shifting it and such so you will probably lose, not the car just you.

About the gears I have no idea I have stockers but there are a ton of people who swear by them. Use the search function there are too many threads about gears

The G35 is around 285hp, but it weighs a hell of a lot. The mustang isnt exactly light either. Might be a pretty good race all in all.
Anyway, why such steep gears? A 3.73 would be an all around better gear, once you start adding mods youll notice pretty quick 1st gear will become nothing but tire spin on the street. Unless your only going to do minor mods such as exhaust, pullies and the gear. If youre going to go more radical or make this car a strip only car then go for 4.56's, but then youd have to dump the manual trans, as the auto would be more consistent.

The first few days I get the car I am just going to go out and drive it for a while but I am going to go ahead and get a short throw shifter before we race. The reason for the 4.30's is because I most likely will keep it N/A for the next year or so. THe only mods I am planning are going to be done over the summer are Nitto 555r's, MGW short throw shifter, 4.30's, and Diablo.
