Cams questions
Ok so I am a noob. I know what cams are but I would like to understand how different cams change performance properties. Also I notice a bunch of people have "Stage 1 Cams" Wondering where to buy them is it a complete install kit and what it would probably cost to have installed. Sorry for the noob question but thanks in advance for any answers.
Aftermarket cams generally allow the engine to breathe better than the stock pieces. They can move the peak power higher(racing)or lower(towing) depending on the application. The difference is how the lobes are ground in relation to the stockers,a higher lift and /or duration changes the power characteristics of the engine.
Todays cam grinders are having a much harder time than the old timers, used to be just about anything you could bo to open the valves farther or keep them open longer would improve power accross the entire rpm range.Today it just ain't so.
Most cams for the 4.6's will be a compromise, you gain power on top end but lose a little down low.You can get some of this lost low end power by getting a good dyno tune.

if you stay with stage 1 cams, a mild cam, you wont have to change the valve springs. You may need to change the cam gear depending if yours is pressed on or not. the type of engine, winsor or romeo, will determine this. go to vtengines.com and have a look. cam install should be a couple hundred bucks.
