RE: Shift light in the vents?
I installed a Raptor shift light in about an hour.It took me longer because I soldered all the connections.Mine is on the steering column by the hazard flasher switch. Here's a link to the raptor site on installs.

If I can find the one about using the vents I'll post it also.

to me, the ac vent just seemed a bit too peripheral. but spend some seat time looking around for a good spot YOU like. mines mounted in the same place as Chopper, but i used double stick velcro so no holes drilled
regardless of where You decide to mount it, raptor is the way to go
i like DavidK's idea but too much work for what its worth. IMO. id think its easier to incorporate it into the bezel holding the gauge cluster (where the headlight switch is), but i dont know.

i always wanted to integrate the shift light into the gauge panal like rig up one of the warning lights as a shift like like the buckle seatbelt light or something
