Well I've done a lot of talking to people, and since I have an o/r H now I can really monitor my oil burning situation. It seems the way my car is smoking would point directly to the valve guide seals/top end. So how bad would it be to hold me over for my horsepower thirst, to do a PI swap with stage 1 cams? I figure this would be an inexpensive option to get some good horse out of my engine for a better dollar than a full rebuild right now, AND the whole engine doesn't have to come out of the car for this one either. I figure if I get a beater car this year, I may be able to pull off doing the swap over winter/early next spring.

It still screams and has good compression, which is why I figured the bottom end has to be still pretty good. Any input, let me know

George
Look into just buying a complete PI engine before you get the H/C/I package. It might seem more expensive, but its either pull the engine complete or tear it apart in the car, and I bet it won't cost that much more to just replace it. Not to mention you will get a newer motor with (probably) less milage on both the heads and shortblock, and a better compression ratio for FI if you ever go that route.

BTW, if you think the car "screams" now you will not know what to do with a PI setup.

yeah... I mean I really really want to get a racing block etc etc... but I just don't think it's possible or neccessary at this point.

I will look around for a good low milage PI engine then... there are so many options I'm just tired of it bein smokey!

It runs perfect otherwise... maybe this sunday I'll do a compression test, wet and dry and see what I get.

is it possible to pull the engine without removing the transmission? I've heard this is true. If so, then maybe I will just buy a low milage PI motor and swap. Or buy a new PI long block... we'll see

I just got another idea. if I do a pi engine swap for the time being, i can gradually completely overhaul the old motor... hmmm... while i drive around on a good engine

Find a FMS 5.4L Navi engine. They are bad for price and have a lot more grunt than the 4.6. There's another link with the 3V engines for sale, but I don't know that one right now.

You don't need to pull the trans with the motor, you unbolt the trans from the motor and leave it in the car. The worst part is removing the headers/manifolds, and the dammed starter bolts.
