well... this is how i did my cams..

i took off both valve covers.... pain in the ***.. you may have to remove other things to get them out

then i removed the cam gear bolts and slid off the cam gear with either zipties or something on it to keep the timing from being screwed up.

then i unbolted the cams and picked them straight out of the motor. i put the new cams in and bolted them down close to where they should be in timing... then i turned the cams till they were lined up with the cam gear and slid the gear back over the cam... this can take alittle work but its possible...
How do you make sure that the timing chain on the crank sproket doesnt jump? If it was my first time I would pull the front cover just to be safe.

I did it the same way just last week. I didnt even use zip ties. I loosened the cam caps, then I just slid the timing gear off the cam and pulled up on it to hold tension. Then I changed out the cam with my other hand and then slid the gear back on the new cam. It fired right up and its still in time. Its a pain in the butt but it can be done.

Not on a VT cam. They dont grind any advance into their cams, whereas Comp cams have about 5* of advance, so they do need degreed on a stage 2 and 3.

Hmm, now I'm interested in this install! 03greyGT, how long did it take you to install those stage 2 cams and springs?

I wouldn't do it that way on my car but others have done that and not had issues..I would remove the timing cover atleast so you can watch to make sure you don't skip a tooth and have real issues. Its only about $15 worth of timing covers gaskets that need to be replaced.

Well, heres where my situation differs from yours. I installed the valve springs and cams the first time over last winter. I took everything off, timing cover included. I followed the write up from modulardepot.com, and Id say it took me about 5 to 6 days of working on it about 2-3 hours a day. I wasnt satisfied with the Crower cams, so I ordered VT cams. Since the springs were already installed, it was simple enough to short cut the job to switch out the cams. If you are doing springs, I would definitely take the cover off, because your gonna have a lot more things to pay attention to other then keeping tension on that cam gear...
