getting reaady to start looking torwards pi swap
for a pi swap, has anyone bought used heads. i was wondering if i could get some out of a junk yard. would it just be better to buy them new. i was probably going to get them p/p before i put them in. what are your thoughts on used heads and intake. do i have to get the stock cams or can i upgrade. if i can upgrade what is a good reccomendation, i plan on running some small FI later and soon a nitrous setup

If I was doinga PI swap, and I was calling junkyards, I would be pricing both the H/C/I and the entire engine/computer assembly. Espcially if you are planning on running FI, as you will be increasing compression ratio.
I could be wrong here, but I bet alot of junkyards will sell you the entire engine nearly as cheap as the H/C/I package. If nothing else they don't have to tear the engine apart and try to just give you the parts.
Plus you don't need to worry about missing parts, and the engine will never have been apart. The other advantage is that you can probably find a lower milage motor than your current stocker.
If you stick with just the PI swap, you can run an aftermarket camshaft, but I do believe you have to stay under .500 lift, or in other words, run a aftermarket cam designed for a NPI car. This will still make alot more power than the stock NPI or PI cams.
If you want to spend major $$, the good shops like DSS and VT engines have plenty of heads to choose from. They are all worked stock versions, but that is all that is avalible. If you are trying to save money, make sure the shop you have port your heads has done the work before on a 2v 4.6L. It is supposed to be an easy job to screw up.

I did my first PI swap with used parts and saved money. Go over to www.corral.net and look in the classifieds area under modular engine parts. Thats basically the busiest 4sale forum for mustangs.
I paid $350 shipped for low mile PI heads/cams and $125 shipped for a PI intake w/aluminum crossover. Then you can get all the needed nuts/bolts/gaskets/tubes etc from Randy S on www.modulardepot.com in the ford parts forum. It cost me about $700 for everything.
or you can get a complete new PI swap for $1350 from www.steenracing.com and have the option to upgrade cams and p&p heads.
