Default Tranny. . . . . . .

Ok guys in about 6 months im gonna buy myself a ricer and stick the old girl on the shelf and start the long tedious project. Im looking to do an auto tranny but i want a mean tranny with hard shifts and ill get a good stall convertor. This isnt going to be strickly a track car so i DONT want a 2-speed powerglide. Im looking to make between 600-800 hp at the wheels. Do they make a good 4 or 5 speed auto tranny thats agressive and can withstand the power? Any suggestions. (And no im not going manual or ill have to shift every .05 seconds and ill loose a LOT of time shifting.)

C4 or Th400. Thats about the only trannies I could think of as far as aftermarket. You could just put it a 99-04 auto and beef it up a little.

Do they even make a rebuild kit that can hold that much power? I could use a powerglide and then attach an O/D box to it and then it would function like a 4-speed but a PG's gears are taaaalllll

Not sure if they make one, but Im sure someone could do it. Looks like a C4 for you. Run ya around the $1700 mark and can supposedly handle 900 hp.

Personally, Id stay with a manual transmission. It would be more fun and you would get better gas mileage and it would probably be cheaper in the long run, while also being stronger. But thats your decision.

Dropping the clutch at 4k rpms with 600rwhp sounds like that would be fun to me...

Haha yeah but this is not a car for gas mileage. Plus even with slicks dropping it a 4k would result in nothing but smoke! . On the 1.4 i would cut off half a second with an auto as opposed to a manual. You guys gotta realize that when ur dealing with cars over 700 hp at the engine shifting quickly is very hard. You loose sooo much time shifting. Even with something like 3.50 or 3.73 gears youll run through the gears so fast that you wont take your foot off the clutch. You just cant shift fast enough. No one can.

I know that. But imo not being able to shift exactly is far outweighed by the fun factor of a manual tranny. Simply personal preference.

yeah i know what you mean. Thats why i have a manual. But the fun factor is kinda out the door when it takes .5 seconds till you have to shift again. Its like why pour all that money into your car only to be held up by slow shifting. Besides i could get a slap shifter for fun factor lol
