how to tell if rear end is going?
How would i be able to tell if my rear end is on its way out? i had my car at a tranny place and they said that it looked like me rear was gonna go, that they heard some type of noise from the pumpkin area where the gears are. i was listening and didnt hear anything. i have no problems with driveability of the car or takeoffs. i dont know if these guys are just trying to get work out of me or what. i do tend to hear a noise coming from my drivers side rear say when im at a light and begin to take off slowly kind of sounds like when a brake is grabbing or something. any ideas?

75w140 with a friction modifier. Royal purple doesn't make this so I put 85w140 in (closer than 75w90), but their lube already comes with the friction modifier. When I had it apart and turning it by hand it was silent... Have a friend come over and turn the wheels for you with your ear close to the diff, even with the cover off there should be next to no sound.

With the rear end unloaded (wheels off the ground) there will almost always be some noise.
With the rear wheels raised and the engine off and car in neutral, slowly rotate each wheel around a little bit.
It should feel pretty smooth and solid.
Any jerking, grabbing or serious knocking indicates a potential problem.
FWIW in my experience with normal driving, rear ends tend to make LOT'S of noise before they fail.
Excepting racing of course where it may just let go on the launch.
Make certain you have the right oil and friction modifier and you are more than likely fine.
