Default installing 3.73 gears

Does anyone know what tools are needed for intalling new gears on a 98 gt. I know you have to replace a few things from the rear end that you take off but not exactly sure what. And how long would it take to do it?

I hope you are a good mechanic, if not done right you will have major problems and end up wasting quite a bit of $.I would say have a good local shop do it.

you can do it at home , but i have a small press that makes it easy . unless u know what ur doin i would not try this if its your first time . here some things that come to mind u may want to think about . old ring gear i like to take off with a press real easy, the pinion bearing can be taken off with out a puller or press if u heat it with a torch briefly. also pressing that bearing back on or using a torch . need a good dial inch ound wrench to check pinion pre load. and a tool or pipe to hold the pinion while tightening it . also in between alll that a pinion depth measuring tool universal or the ford one to figure if u need a diff shim ,i have both. some people just go off the marking on the pinion. there some stuff i left out and it depends on how complete the intall kit is also . i would watch some one do it if u never have or people can help u here, but be ready to buy some tools ,and have acess to some stuff (press would be nice)and get ready for a decent challange if u have never done anything like this ,thats all

the install kit , depends , is all your replacing is the ring and pinion . your not putting a different carrier right ? i like the m-4210-b kit . why ? cuz i personally dont like f**king with the pressed pinion bearing with a torch , i dont like putting that back in , i know some of u say it works but i would rather put new bearings in there and call it a day , and the kit comes with diff bearings too . imo i woud put that in . if you would like a price qoute from me send me an e mail . put some good synthetic and the friction modifier tooo.

98stang,

If you haven't installed a rear end before I highly recommend you have someone guide you through it that has. The Pre-load and backlash needs to be set correctly or the ring and pinion will whine. In addition, if the preload and lash isn't set correctly it can cause failure after awhile.

Find someone who has done it before and invite them over for a few beers while they help you install it.

Good luck.
