All ford mustangs came from the factory with a really nice feature. It is called syncros, they are really nice and make it so you dont have to rev match to downshift like a semi driver My old car a 2k celica gts 6spd had its 3rd gear syncro going out I always had to rev match on the downshift or else it would grind. Rev matching is all about practice, after a while you will get a good enough feel for the car and will be able to select the right rpm's for a lower gear without even thinking about it. Import crowd=inexperianced drivers and I have heard of this happening to plenty of them: Please do not select to low of a gear for the downshift!! 2nd gear while going 50 mph = Bent valves and a possible engine rebuild[:'(].

For rev matching you need to figure out what your RPM's are at at certain speeds in all the gears.

Lets say in 3rd gear at 60 you are turning 3,000 Rpms. You then put it in 5th and are turning 1,700 Rpms. In order to rev match, if you are at 60 in 5th gear, you need to put the clutch in and rev it up to 3000 Rpm-put it in third as you are doing this- and then let the clutch out.

I learned to rev match on my old audi before I got my stang. It takes a while to master, but once you do, there is nothing like nailing a downshift and only hearing the motor rev up and not feeling the car make any movement. These videos may help.

Great videos man! That guy is really good. I'm going to practice rev matching more this week when I drive. I just pray and hope I did not damage my engine, transmission or the syncros. Stupid me, I'm too eager to hotrod the car. I just gotta slow down and practice more.

Rev matching does help get the car in gear but the Rev matching we are talking about is not for ease of putting the car in gear. If you just put the car in gear and let the clutch out the car will jolt because the motor is moving at a lower RPM than the drivetrain. Rev matching allows the engine and drivetrain to engain at the same rpms, thus making it feel as if all the car did was increase in rpms. If you just put it in gear and let your clutch out get ready to be replacing the clutch soon.

How will I know the clutch is failing? I have noticed it's pretty stiff, maybe even stiffer than usual. Now I don't know if that's because it's cold now outside, or maybe because it's failing. Being this is my first manual car, I'm not sure what the failing signs are.

All stangs have stiff cluthes. Signs of a failing clutch are: VERY stiff clutch, the revs will climb and then fall again when the car is in gears (slipping), probably a few others that somebody else may know.
