Default Intake install

What is the hose that runs from the plenum to the square box then to the intake? Can i remove the box and just run a hose from the plenum to the intake?

I want to know if i can just run a hose from the plenum to the port on the intake without the box

I think the little box is some sort of regulator for the air or something so I'd leave it on, but thats just me.
