Rear diff replace how hard is it? Can a driveway mechanic do it?
My diff is fried and i have a detroit trutrac on the way. Can i do this myself or do i need to go to a shop? Im sure i could put it in but i dont get the shim part. And do i need any special tools? Thnx
A dial guage to set the gear backlash is about the only special tool you need. The shims move the differential closer or further away from the pinion gear.
you can do it yourself but you need the backlash guage and pinion depth guage to set pinion depth you can eigther put the shims behined the bearing race or between the pinion gear and the pinion bearing and backlash you just put the shims on the outside of the bearing race. Pinion depth on motive gears are to be set at 2.4 inches and backlash you should set at .010 of an inch. Backlash is the space between the pinion gear and the ring gear where they come together.make sure you get a new crush sleeve dont reuse the old one. when doing backlash move 2 shims at aa time to get a reading.
If your not changing the ring and pinion gears you should not have to check pinion depth.
Like chopper said a dial indicator and a mag base should be all you need to get your backlash set.
See this link I got from somebody. Got some good info on setting backlash.

If you do it yourself make sure you mark the bearing caps and dont mix them up.

I think I'm pretty good with a wrench. I've put my Cobra Brakes, Bullitt suspension, upper and lower control arms, 200 amp alternator, stereo system, CAI, TB, intake plenum, grill delete and chin spoiler on myself in my garage and I plan on installing my futer KB myself.
I am going to have a shop put my gears in. I've read up on it and I think I can do it. It doesn't seem all that hard, but I'm not going to make my girl a guinea pig for my first attempt. I had the diff cover off when I had to pull the axles out to change the rear caliper bracket when I put the Cobra brakes on. If I'm not mistaken the pinion races are pressed on so you'll need a puller to get it off and a press to put it back on. A dial caliper and a magnetic base to hold it is a must as well.
Long story short, I'm not going to mess with it. I'll pay the shop $200 in labor to do it for me. At least that way if some thing goes wrong or isn't right, I can blame them and not myself.
