I'm thinking about replacing the alternator just so I don't get a surprise break down.

If your alternator has excessive miles OR has crapped out on you...LET'S HEAR IT!!!

Edit: I've got 47,000 on a 2000 GT.

This is a little relevant, I bought a new one from PA performance after my head swap and got it in powdercoat blue. Should of kept the original!!!! It was a total nightmare as PA performance alt's just don't seem to have good internals. The alt. crapped out on me and I sent it back to have it rebuilt only to have it take another dump!!!! They then sent me another brand new unit and it went south!!! Went to Autozone and bought a rebuilt with no problems! Sorry to highjack but thought I'd put that out there.

mine hasnt luckily and ive had over 1800 watts of system pumpin for a while, but thats outta the car now

Just wait until it dies.

Alternators are kinda like fuel pumps. You can have one last forever and a day, or it could die tomarrow. You could go get another new one and it could die tomarrow too.

If it dies on you usually it will not leave ya stranded. The CEL light will come on if it quits charging (and you can drive awhile on the battery), and if the bearing goes out on ya so long as you don't have far to drive you will be ok too (I just drove to a friends house).

I just replaced the STOCK one in my '86 Toyota due to intermitent failure. 20 years old and finally kicked the bucket.

Back in the day I had a 90 LX 5.0 with pullies on it. I went through 5 alternators in 6 months. I was a young gun at the time and didn't thing about getting a regular set of pulleys and mustangforums.com was non-existant. I'm not sure the pulleys f-d it up. But, that's where I'd place my bet.
