all you need really are the cams... they say it takes a special tool to hold the timing in place while putting the new one in but i just used some zip ties and it worked perfect. cams cost around 500-600 dollars. if you do stage 2 or more you will need valve springs yet i have been fine on stock with stage 3 cams.

Careful with Comp, I put stage 2's in and notched all my pistons with my valves. I ended up getting a forged motor (from MMR) with fly cut pistons out of it.

Running stock short block is only an issue if you go over XXX rwhp, or if you want to change compression ratio. You can argue all day about the much XXX is too much, so I'm not giving an actual #.

I wouldn't advise running the stock heads. Have them ported/polished, bronze valve guides, and valve springs that can support the lift of your cams. I had .500 lift Stage III Crowers. The springs alone cost almost $500. Radical cams sound great, but may require a tune that you won't like as a daily driver (e.g. horrible gas mileage).
