for those wanting more then 1000 horse id imagine. and maybe peace of mind? Parts just depends on you go with and if you can find a deal. pistons, probably 350-500, heads1300-2600 rods 400-600.

these numbers are just from what ive seen in mags, call your authorized horsepower supply for acctural numbers lol

The 99 and 2000 blocks are Windsor blocks which are supposed to be a little stronger.
what's the 01-04? did they change because it was cheaper? how much will they hold?
01-04 are Romeo blocks. Both of them are rated about the same. Like I posted the Windsor is "supposed" to be abit stonger.
Windsor blocks have better engineered main caps (side pins). Otherwise, Romeo and Windsor blocks are about the same. The limiting strenght factor in any short block is the rotating assembly. Non-forged internals are good up to 400-450 rwhp, forged internals are good up to 800 rwhp (maybe even more).

The way to know for sure what type of block you have is by your VIN (Position 8), not by the year of your car:

A picture (or two) is worth a thousand words. Here's the main difference between Windsor and Romeo 4.6L blocks:

Ok. If the actual block(no rotating parts) can handle 1000 horses why do so many companys sell forged short blocks. So Ideally wouldnt you just tear the block down and start from scratch with forged parts. How much would all these parts cost. Exaple forged connecting rods, fly cut pistions, Stage III heads, Big cams.
When you buy a forged shortblock from a company you are getting a stock Ford modular block with forged internals...there are no aftermarket 4.6 blocks because the stock ones are great.

While you are correct % 99.99, there is an aftermarket block available from SHM:

However, the SHM aftermarket block isover 10x the cost of a stock Ford casting, which works justfine. All the SHM crate motors use the Ford block.

so you guys are saying a winsor block will hold approx. 800-1000hp. i plan to get some where between 550-650 rwhp. so am i better off going with a forged setup. i planned to put a kb on it, and i think from what yiou guys are saying i should go forged. does the 99-00 windsor block come with a forged crank?? i thought i heard it does?????? so really all i need would be pistons, rods, heads and cams. let me know?????

No the crank is not forged...I believe you're thinking of the mach 1 block.

Romeo and Windsor blocks are rated THE SAME!!!!!! Take whatever block you have, and get it blueprinted.

You don't need/want cams if you're going to s/c.

You do want high-flow heads.... in fact, if you plan to have 550-650 "streetable" rwhp on pump gas, you need 4v heads.

You need forged rods and pistons for anything over 450rwhp.

You don't have a forged crank in your motor, only the 03/04 Cobra came stock with a forged crank. The Mach-1 has the same internals as the GT.

I've been told that the non-forged cranks are pretty strong, but I'm not one to cut corners. The forged crank (Cobra) has an 8-hole flange on the rear, so you may need to modify the tranny (I needed a different flex plate).

I knew someone was gonna bring up that SHM block after i wrote my reply...but I didn't include it in my comment because no street cars are running that $5,000 block.

you don't need 4V heads to have a reliable streetable 550-600rwhp on pump gas...alot of 2V's do that easily.

all Cobras N/A and Blown have forged cranks and so does the manual tranny Mach 1
