The purpose of mufflers is to muffle the sound. 
More chambers muffle more soundthan fewer chambers do. Straight thru designs sound just like you'd think, loudcause there's not much to muffle the sound as it goes nearly "straight thru". There's tons of exhaust clips on this forum if you use the search.
