Well start by never shifting it like a manual. Unless you upgrade to manual valve body your tranny can't handle being shifted like a manual. You have probably messed up something internally and the next gear isn't catching.

Your tranny has 2 sets of gears for 2nd. The Planetary gear drive set" and the sun gear set. with out a manual valvebody the bands cannot keep up with the rotating mass when you shift from one gear set to another. When you put your car in dirve you use the planetary set, and when you start your car in low or 1 then shift to 2 your driving with a completely diff. set of gears that are not meant to be shifted while moving. They don't have the same band function as the other! You prob have a loose or burned up band. They are basically like the oil filter wrenches that have a handle on them, but with brake pad material on the insides of them! You prob. should get a rebuilt tranny that's made for what you wanna do. $1400 plus install

Can people with 99-03s upgrade easilly to a 4R70W? Always wondered that.....if so, I would look into junking the AODE and switching to the 4R70W if a new tranny is in the works.

it should bolt right up, altho certain things were changed here and there throughout production.... by all means i'd upgrade to a 4r70w... you can 'manually' shift them safely unlike the AODE trans.
