High Idle

High Idle
Hey guys I have a bit of a problem. About a month ago, when the weather started to get a bit colder, I noticed a bit of a problem with my car, namely the fact that when I was out of gear the car would idle at about 1500r rpms, sometimes as high as 1800. If I kept it in high gear as I was coming to a stop, dropping the rpm's to below 1000, but as soon as I went out of gear or even pushed the clutch in the rpms would begin to climb, sometimes it would stay around 1100, but most times going back up to around 1500. Even when I rev the engine, it seems to take an ungodly long time for the rpms to drop, even if it is from 2500 to 1500.
The only other problem I've had with the car is if I'm shifting from first to second at high rpms, I've had the car stall on me 2 times, not sure if these things are related.
Any advice you can give will be much appreciated....
thanks in advance
Ron

RE: High Idle
Sounds like your IAC is sticking open and sometimes closed. Take it off and clean it out with carb cleaner real good, then finish it off with brake cleaner. If the problem persists then replace the IAC. 99% chance thats your problem.

RE: High Idle
I had a similar problem on an old car. It turned out to be a vaccum line had a hole in it and so the car's ECU would compensate and keep the RPMs high. I had a check engine light on though so I'm sure you would see something like that if it was the problem

RE: High Idle
got a chance to work on the car this weekend....turns out it wasn't the IAC got a new one from the ford dealership, installed it and the car still didn't work any better. Then I started to check the other sensors, turns out my throttle position sensor was stuck. Replaced that and the car is idling fine now. Thanks for the suggestions guys
