Default Question about the locking lug nut

I bought my car a year ago and found out that my car has no lock for the wheels. If I have some new tires put on will the mechanic have a tool to bust the lockinglugnutthats on the wheels? Also how much does a lock cost at the Ford dealership?

Default RE: Question about the locking lug nut

Not sure about getting the lock key from the dealer but I had a Mazda mellenia that got a flat tire about 2 moths after I bought the car while I was on the way to Kansas from Miami, I was in georgia at the time of the flat tire with the car full of clothes, computer, 27" TV, lol that car was packed. So I unloaded my trunk to get the spare and then I realized I didnt have the Key for the lock nut!!! Drove my car with the flat for about 5 miles, well it wasnt completely flat....the rubber layer of the tire stripped off due to my side spoiler flying off and slashing it, so I was basically driving on the steel radials of the tire. Anyways I got to a small gas station with a shop in it, they couldnt get the lock nut off so I asked them if I could use an impact hammer with a chisseled end. Well I got it off by cutting off the stud and damaged that area of the rim. Later I changed the stud and was able to use the rim fine.

***The lock you have to get from Ford (if they are factory installed locks). It costs about $40. To order it, you need to give them your VIN. You can't go to EBay or American Muscle to buy the locks. No one else will make the key that fits the lock that's on your car except for Ford... If you take it to a shop, they can get it off. They'll use turbo sockets or a hammer and chisel to get it loose and then just beat a socket on it. I've done it many times.

NO!!! Dont bust it off!!! What i do is find a socket that is a little smaller then the other keys and use a hammer and pound the socket on the lock and then just unscrew the lug nut... you may beable to used the socket still if you get that key out otherwise just throw the oscket away!! You dont ruin anything that way!! DONT BREAK ANYTHING!!!

Your local ford dealer should have a key for it, and they can order one for you.

Get the key and take them off. I HATE those things. Unless you live in the ghetto and have 24's, I dont think anyones jacking your wheels. Just put regular lugs on them..

+1 As far as I know there is no "special tool" used to take them off.... I used to work at Discount Tire many years ago.... if the customer had locks and no key we would first try and find a key that would fit ok... we had a few extras lying around... if that didnt work we used the socket approach, just hammer the socket on and unscrew it with an Impact Wrench!

As far as buying them DONT! They are absolutley WORTHLESS! Just makes it more of a headache! NO ONE is going to try and steal your rims if they are stock or look like stock! And unless you live in Compton or a bad area you should never have to worry about it! I HATE wheel locks! Unless you have wheels that are worth THOUSANDS I dont see the point! No one want's $500-$1000 rims! Your more likely to get your car broken into than the stupid rims stolen!
