Default Brakes and Bearings

Im new, thanks for taking the time to read. Im about to change the rotors and pads on my 02 GT but someone told me that i might need to change the wheel bearings at the same time, i have been having problems with my abs not turning off when i apply brakes. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: also, are they sealed or non-sealed bearings?

Fortunately, the bearings on SN95+ Stangs are all Sealed hub/bearing assy, meaning there's no way to grease them. Change them when they start making noise, unless you've got a bunch of money kicking around (approx. $100-120 a piece)..

I'm not sure what you mean by the ABS not turning off when you hit your brakes. Are you talking about the light on the dash, or do your brakes lock up??

No way I bought mine for $35 each at local parts store. You do need a very large socket to get the axle nut off and it needs to be at something crazy like 200ft/lbs

Maybe where you shop.. I can't get some parts cheap.. But yes, the Torque to put the spindle nut back on is pretty high... I don't remember, but I think the low end was 184ft/lbs, but you'll want to check a manual to get the right numbers..

Oh, and you have slip on rotors, meaning, once you get the caliper/bracket off, the rotor should just slip off of the lug studs..

For your other problem, does the Cruise turn off period, or do you have to press "COAST," to get the car to shut down?? My money's on the brake switch.. This is similar to the switch that triggers the lights when you apply your brakes...

Do you get any codes??

The cruise control turns off when i press the off button but if i want to use the brakes to turnthe cc off i have to hold down on them as the car continues to try and drive forward (against the brakes) so i pretty much have to use the off button, it could be very unsafe in an emergency if i have to quickly brake and the cruise control continues to move the car forward.

Well, it deffinantly sounds like the switch activated by your brake pedal, like JT said,,,, I am not sure wher eit is on our cars, but if you have a manual I'm sure it's an easy fix

You should know if you need to replace a wheel bearing. I recently had to replace my front left wheel bearing. I could hear and feel a grinding noise when the I steered right and it went away when I steered back left. It took me a while to diagnose but I figured it out pretty quickly when I lifted the car, took the wheel off and could rattle the rotor/hub assembly. It is a sealed assembly that was easy to change once you find a socket and a torque wrench large enough.
