Easiest way to tell if have performance chip?

Thats not exactly how it works. The higher the octane the more resistant it is to the flame. It doesnt necessarily mean it burns more efficient. Thus the reason you need to adjust the timing to run higher octane. If you are running 93 octane in a engine that doesnt require anything over 87 octane then you will get a lot of wash on the walls and the unburned gas will eventually get to the O2 sensors and burn them out. It can also tear the cats up. Not good at all really.

I run 91 octane because I get slightly better gas mileage, is the 91 gonna cause more buildup than the 87? I'd feel likea dumbass for paying more for gas that was doing me harm in the longrun.

1.99-2.00 93.... JD is correct. GT wont run any better with 93, than 87, which they are programed to run on. So using this gas will do nothign for you. Well, except if you have mods, then it might alittle.

WTF. It's closer to $3 here in chicago for 93. Anyway, if you put 93 in a motor requiring 87, nothing will happen at all. You wont burn up your cats, you wont get lots of blow by, you wont damage your O2, you wont make more power, you wont make less power, you might get a very little increase in gas mileage, not much at all. All 93 is, compared to 87, is it resists combustion better. As soon as your plug sparks, no matter the octane wether it's 87, 89, 93, it's gonna burn and produce your power stroke. Now, if your 87 requiring engine has alot of miles on it and tends to diesel *continue running after shutting it off) it's because the motor has built up a ton of carbon on the piston face and valves. When this much is produced, when cumbustion happens, the carbon gets hot enough to begin to glow. This is what causes pre-ignition (the combustion happens before the spark). This is when you need a higher octane fuel in a motor that otherwise doesn't require that higher octane. So in a nut shell, use what ever octane makes you happy, as long as you don't go bellow the required amount for your car.
