Default K&N filters and engine damage

I know there is a thread somewhere on here about k&n filters supposedly causing problems. I have a k&n I am about to put on my 02 GT. Has anyone actually experienced a problem with one of these filters? I did some googling and could not find much. I can see if someone tries to clean an re-oil their filter, they could put too much and cause some sensor problems, but out of the box, I can't believe these filters would cause a problem. They have been around forever and I have to believe there are millions of them out there.

no problems here, i've used them since they first came out. just make sure the re-oiling has dried before it goes back on.about 20 minutes of drying time then it goes back on.

I suspect most of the problems are from improper use of cleaning and oiling. I can see someone easily putting too much oil and causing a problem. The instructions clearly warn against this.
