**** and i get a discount with autozone for working at goodyear (use to) I might just try these. Good for the pro kit? or not good for lowered cars?
The Gabriel Ultras (not the cheaper Guardian OEM equivalents) are good for lowered suspensions as they don't have any of that silly "tapered/grooved tube", "comfort zone" crap like the Monroe Sensa-Trak**. My experience is that they are every bit as good (and probably the same damned thing) as the more costly Tokico and KYB non-adjustable series--and if you really like the pretty colors than buy a rattle can of Rustoleum, you'll still save money.--------------------------------**--The Monroe's actually have a tapered and "micro-grooved" bore that reduces the shock action at and about "normal" ride height/action; and then stiffens up as shock travel increases. They have a very odd feel on a lowered suspension with moderate compression getting up into the "comfort zone", and an overly quick rebound out of same.Actually (and again 100% IMHO) everything Monroe makes is "happy-homeowner" grade, designed to minimize call-backs when some tire place replaces the 85k mile old shocks on "gramp's" car and he comes back bitching about the "harsh" ride. I think that's whay Sears, Midas, and most of the tire places "feature" them.
I just installed KYB GR-2's on mine car a couple of weekends ago and I found them to be very good quality and a little tighter than the stockers but I also installed Tein drop springs at the same time so I do not know how much the springs alonecontributed to the improvement.
You guys are right, they are more costly, but until you have tried an adjsutable shock you just don't know what your missing.
I can go from a smooth ride thats still firm enough for DD to a weight transfer setup perfect for the strip to a stiff suspension that works great on a circut course or just going out and having fun on the twistys.
I will never again buy non adjustable shocks for a performance/sport car. All in all, they are still under 400 bucks, and suspension wise they have been by far my best investment.
