Default Trouble with posi install!

So I am replacing my old, worn out posi with an Eaton unit and I'm having trouble getting the new unit to fit in the differential case. I had my gears done at a shop about a year ago, I got 3.73's. When I removed the unit, the shims were just one solid piece on each end. I though there were shim packs that I could swap around to adjust backlash... nope, just one single thick shim for each side. This new unit seems a bit too big and I need less shim. I would need a freakin' mallet to get the new posi unit to fit. Am I retarded or do I just need actual shim packs to do this?

When I had a ford dealer install my gears (got screwed too lol) they gave me the leftover shims, it was in a bag with a ford part number on it, probably had 10 of them. I just chucked em thinking I would never need em.

Ok, so the guy that did my gears probobly chucked the stock shims and replaced them with single units. That sucks, now I need to pick up shim packs.

The factory uses just the spacers (technically they are "shims", just thick ones)when possible because they have them available in 0.001" increments and it makes assembly easier. When I did the 3.73's in my '03 GT there was just a single spacer on the passenger's side and a spacer and a "shim" on the driver's side. I had tochange the passenger sidespacer out for a thinner one, and use additional shims on both sides, to get the backlash set (0.0095" right on the money!)...[/align]

Ok, thanks. I went ahead and got the shim kit and was able to get the unit in and only 3 tries later got the backlash right. This Eaton LSD is freakin great! No more peg-legs out of a turn.

That's funny, took me three attempts to get the backlash right when I installed my gears. Seems to be the magic number.
