crap, btw, that black cap that sits on top of the whole assembly...does it do anything? I keep twisting it and returning it to the original (estimated) position?

that i dont know, but it looks similar to something along the lines as a vent, but that wouldnt make much sense would it

I dunno...when I twist it, it feels like it kind of grinds against, say some dirt, for a small part of the turn, then it moves smoothly as I keep twisting it...but when I peek inside, I can't really tell much a difference at all (I haven't tried to twist it in one direction to see how far I can go).
