Should I be worried
I want to buy my 1st mustang soon 03-04 gt. Ive been reading some threads on the tremec 3650 trans on how its a POS. I cant afford to spend all this money on a mustang then have to pay another 1,500 on a new trans. Should I maybe resort only to autos? Are these cars always prone to having trans problems. Thanks
No, as long as your find one that was taken care of and not beaten on by some kid like me it will be fine. My friend has a 2001 GT with 61000 miles and he has been through 6 automatic AOD trans's in it. He has even cracked 2 cases. When you test drive one make sure that you do not hear a whining noise comming from the transmission area and it should be good. The 3650 has a torque rating of 360 ft-lbs of torque that those cars only make about 310 at best stock. When ever you beat the **** out of something or use it incorrectly or unapropriatly ofcourse its going to break. Those are some things you should look for.
First off.... The Autos in these things are rocks.... I know people who TRY to break them and they simply wont....
And yes the 3650s are POS's.... Ask anyone! Unless you plan on driving like a grandma then plan on replacing parts for it.
There are members on here with LOTs of power that drive their 3650s HARD but they all know it is a ticking time bomb.....
P.S...... I would still take the 3650 over my auto though simply for the fun factor... If you plan on being a track guy though you cant go wrong with either one. A built auto is MEAN

Take an auto and put some different gears, a shift kit, and a good stall and you will tear up the track.
Autos are very consistent. Unless you are VERY good at driving a stick then a built auto will take you every time.

Auto FTL... the 3650 is pretty solid. At stock power levels you'll have a veryhard time breaking it. I ran sticky 295 width tires and a 100 shot for a year, powershifting it all of the time, it's still just fine, I am on weak tires now so no more worry of breaking it, but I could powershift 2nd on the spray and the tires wouldcatch, barely chirp... much larger forces than the transmission was designed to take. It will be fine!
