Default "Too Lean" Code....?

I've searched through the existing posts on the PO171 too lean in bank 01 and it seems the most common problem is theO2 sensors. The damn engine light came on a few weeks ago, started running rough and the exhuast "pops" on downshifts...sounding like crap and sucking gas like crazy. I unplugged the battery, went through the IAC, MAF, and even swapped sides with my MIL's (no cats). The light stayed of until yesterday night. I'm going to get the code read again to ensure it's the same code, but I'm confident it's the same one. I'm getting frusterated...it's not a daily driver,soI've parked it for now. I'm about ready to take it in and have it diagnosed. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I bend over?

The slightest exhaust leak above the upstream o2 will cause this..and the popping on decel...any leaks?Manifold area....pipe to manifold?...

If you have stock exhaust manifolds that'd be the first place i'd check. They are spot welded instead of bead welded on the manifold to pipe flare fitting. Bank 1 is the side where the #1 cylinder is. If it's on the passenger side like a V6 (what I have), it doesn't surprise me. The AC drain for the condensor is right on top of the exhaust pipe regardless of GT or V6.

Get under the car, loosen the manifold to pipe fitting it may just come apart in your hand like it did mine when I was swapping exhaust. [&:]

I'll get under there and check it out this weekend. It's aGT w/ stock exhaust minfold, o/r h-pipe, no cats and flows out the side. Unfortunately it does bottom out once in a great while due to theRoush exhuast set-up, so that could be a posibility.

Thanks for the info.

Check for a vacuum leak after the mass air flow sensor. Plenum and intake gaskets, iac hose, all those can cause unmetered air to seep in and throw off the tune. Get a bottle of carb cleaner and start spraying around.

Thanks to all for the help. It turns out the down tubes were loose at the exhuast manifold....go figure. I got them tightened up and it's back in buisiness. It's amazing what a little exhaust leak can do.

Thanks again!
