Default shifter question?

how can i tell if i have a factory shifter or an aftermarket shifter?
it doesn't shift smoothly, is that normal. from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 pretty rough. If i decide to get a shifter. which is the best that offer the smoothest shift?
THanks

Are you grinding or just not going into gear? In either case, you may have issues beyond your shifter. Just pull off the consoleand look at it. You'll know. Stock shifters a cheezy looking. If you go with an after market shifter, take a look at MGW. Its solid and shifts way better than stock.

Go to the dealer and just have a salesman get in and shift around for 2 seconds. Don't let them drive or anything, just let them get in and they'll definately know.

it takes like 5 seconds to pull the consol up man.

it just pops off.

take it off and look..
most after market shifters are polished and have the brand name stamed on them and the stock ones are well... Ford usual cheezy looking junk

Reverse is hard and grinding. Is it because I didn't shift right? from 2nd to 3rd too.

2nd to 3rd used to be a bitch for me, just go easy with it, and go diagonal rather than moving to the right and up

It sounds more like your throwout bearing is going bad, or is bad already. From what I understand, they only last a couple years?

Reverse if probably grinding because it doesn't have a syncro. You have to either have to fully stop or put it into another gear like first and then into reverse. I always go first to reverse because it has just become a habit for me.

Shifter wise, I would go for an MGW or a Steeda Tri-Ax. Most people just say to get what they have. You will probabl be happy with either of them. I love my MGW but that is the only shifter I have experience with.
