can some one please educate me on what an exhaust system consist of. I"ve hard cat-back, mid-pipe, etc.
what is a cat-back system? what is mil? please educate me.
i'm dying to learn.

Headers - Come directly off the engine from each valve and is what starts your exhausts journey.

Mid pipe, H or X or Y, this is the main pipe(s) that will etheir include your cat converters or not include them.

Cat Back - This is the trip all the way to the tips in the back, that will come after your cats which are on the midpipe.

Mils are what tricks your o2 sensors into thinkin you have cats if you have a Offroad pipe that dosnt include cats.

now i have a better understanding.
so basically, catback is the pipe after the cat convert, the muffler and the tip right?

also

straight pipes = straight from ur headers out

dumps = exhaust dumps before or after axle

cut out's = make them in electric or manual can open and close them, makin ur exhust dump usually right after headers

how can i tell if my mid pipe is stock or aftermarket?
and if i get a mid pipe w/o the cats will my car pass inspection/emission?
or do i have to use a mil eliminator.
