Default Lag and smelling gas!!!

Hello, i'm brand new to this forum, so let me introduce myself, My nick is Saruji, I'm into cars and so hence I own a few. One of them happens to be a 1998 Mustang GT convertible with the 4.6 liter v8 engine. Recently I have had problems with it, the car's engine would die and not idle for a little while. I'm lazy and just thought a mechanic could fix it, brought it to the mecanic, he said, O2 sensor, I said logical enough, its cold and winter and I dont want to work on it, the mecanic replace it. Now the car doesnt die, however there is a power loss, it feels like its running rich (and smells like it too). When driving from a dead stop there is a pause and then the car accelarates, plus after your done driving and get out, you smell gas. I know this has got something to do with it running rich but havent worked on cars for so long that I dont know where to start looking. You advice?
