Higher octane fuel can actually harm your engine, as the fuel will not burn completely and leave a lot of carbon build up.

Could someone please explain the differance in octane levels?? Because the way I understand it the Higher the number the quicker it ignites. Therefor high compression cars that rev quicker and boosted cars and nitrous cars need the fuel to ignite quicker. If i am wrong correct me?? And explain how it works. And in theory if i am right cars that run 93 that do not need it in time "could" pre detonate.

Higher octane fuels do not burn as easily as lower octane fuels.

If you run too high of an octane fuel in your engine, the fuel will not burn completely. This will cause 2 things: poor engine efficiency (read: low fuel economy and performance) and unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber, aka carbon build-up.

This is not so, octane rating is not at all related to the burn (deflagration) rate--and even if it was, within limits the O2 sensors would detect the unburnt fuel and the PCMshort term fuel trim would accomodate it by leaning out the mix...read more than you ever wanted to know about octane here...

what gas octane is everybody using, can these cars run off of 93 as well an 87? 00 gt
In stock form, your GT isn't going to run any better nor any worse on any octane at or above 87.
I'm just goingto quote myself so the OR gets hisquestion answered correctly without all the misinformation.

I was running 89 in my 02 with all my mods in my sig. I recently switched over to 87 and have no probs. No detonation, no "lost performance"..none of that. Actually...I see better mileage with 87 than I do 89. Really....higher octane isnt needed unless youre tuned.
