I already have a diablosport predator for my car, and I firmed up the shifts through that... so on a nice day I can kick the assend out a lil bit from 1-2... and I weigh in at about 290lbs. ontop of the weight of the stang.
firmer shifts = more pressure = more heat = less tranny life

id focus on a cooler. a mild stall wouldnt hurt... but it wouldnt do too much for you as your powerband doesnt go that high. instead of the cost for a stall, id go with gears.
so what I should get is a tranny cooler, and a shift kit? I really don't want gears right now becuase when I drive home from VA to NJ for holidays and such it takes about 5-6 hours, and I really need all the gas I can get right now.... I'd like to do 4.10's after I graduate and maybe get a beater car.
Ive been through several N/A auto mustangs and as far as transmission mods go, Id do a trans cooler first, gears then converter/valvebody. For a n/a car, a converter in the 3400+ range seems to be the choice of most since the torque comes on at about 4200 rpms or so. Boosted cars may use more/less stall depending on what type of blower is used.

3400 is a little steep for a stock 4.6. the torque should top out at about 4200.. but torque is low in the powerband.. its what gets the car moving. i dunno about a 3,400... im running a 3,000 but you guys have read my mods.. =/

Yeah, I would think that a 3k stall is perfect for a Twinscrew car since torque comes on rather early. I was thinking of a typically modded 2v...exhaust, gears, intake stuff when I was refering to a 3400 stall, but I get your point. I just didnt want him to throw in a 2800 stall and feel like it wasnt enuf and have to send it back for a restall.

how would I benefit from a stall? What exactly does it do?

Its like dropping a clutch in a manula trans car at a given rpm. With a 3k stall for ex., u can floor it from a dig and the rpms will shoot to 3000 as the car launches giving you better take off and getting you in the powerband faster. Your stock converter stall is roughly 1700 rpms by the way. Check outwww.converter.com for more clarification on this or do a search on torque converters.

but what happens when I pull away from a stoplight??? will it have to rev up to 3000 rpms before it grabs??? Or does it do like a partial grab...

and I'm not trying to snap any axles... and I don't see a set of 31 splines in my future yet.

If you use street tires, you won't break an axle. The tires will spin before it breaks. Even some Nittos probably wouldn't hurt. Many have even used M/T drag radials and stock axles and got away with it, but it would then be recommended to get stronger axles.

sweet... I think I'll hold off on the stall until I can afford to get some drag susp., slicks, and a beefy rear... and a beater car so I don't have to DD a drag car!

With a high stall converter theres not much difference in daily driving than with the stock one. Only when you floor it you can really tell the difference.
