18s hinder performance?

RE: 18s hinder performance?
If you think you don't need bigger tires, and better traction tires to get a good launch than you have the wrong car.

RE: 18s hinder performance?
A good point here is the compound the tire is made of. Sticky tires do wonders for traction, handling or accelerating. But not without additional expense. Since the originator of the thread didn't really define the type of performance they are concerned about, its difficult to address straight on. Launching a car from a dead stop requires different dynamics than say, cutting a tight corner on a road course or street. My experience, without compound adjustments, the larger rims, and therefore the extremely small tire side wall, doesn't flex and store some of the initial energy when taking off from a dead stop. They do, corner EXtremely well.
The best approach, is to go sticky, but you may need to spend that $300-400 a tire for new rears every 10K miles.
Good luck with your decision !!

RE: 18s hinder performance?
It depends on what performance you are talking about- for drags yes the 18s are slower they lower your stock gear ratio which is critical for 1/4 mile and nittos are harder and hook less than bfgs that hook hard and wear out faster.

yes larger wheels will hurt your performance since the mass is further from the axis. there is more rotational inertia, ie the wheel is harder to spin because the mass is further from the center.

RE: 18s hinder performance?
wow...lots of helpful info in this thread..
i really want to get these rims(link below) in black, but if it will hurt performance a lot it probably isnt worth it...I just think that the black will REALLY compliment the color of my car..Im sure i can find a decent 17in tire.
