I'd check for a a blown fuse (I can't remember which one) or bad wiring to the "always hot" KAM (Keep Alive Memory) terminal at the PCM--when the KAM clears the gauges do their full scale thing as part of the initalPCM start-up. Disconnecting the battery for 5-7 minutes will cause them to do it.I doubt it's a bad battery, because it takes at least 3-4 minutes at 0.0 volts to reset the KAM and that would not occur during cranking the engine...
you sir are wrong. it take 15 seconds if not MILI seconds to clear the KAM and a bad battery can and WILL cause these symptons as I and other members on the forum have experienced them. My car cranked perfectly fine for weeks yet the gauges always went maxed out at start up. Had the battery tested, came back bad, replaced, problem solved!

edit:

btw to the Orginal poster, did you ever get your battery tested? Seriously takes less than an hour of your time. If you can get a ride take your battery out, go drop it off and pick it up when they call or in an hour. Its free.

Drive up to auto zone they will test it for free and it only takes 5 min. you dont even have to pull it out of the car.
