Default problem shifting into 2nd

Hey mechs,

In need of your help.

I have a 99 GT convert. 78,000+ miles.

last night this problem started. when trying to go from 1st to 2nd, I had to put in a lot of muscle to get it into 2nd. No chattering or anything just alot of muscle. I always shift this car just before red lining in each gear and I noticed that the problem doesn't happen when shifting from 1st if the rpms are say less than 6000.

I checked my maintenance book and it points to either the clutch or gears. Has anyone ever had this problem before or does anyone know whats happening. I was thinking maybe the pressure plate?

*I know it's not the tranny cause I recently had the fluid changed along with the rear diff fluid. also, there's no leaks.

Thanks,

techsent

Just cause you changed the tranny fluid doesn't mean it can't be a syncro problem! Also, why do you redline it? There's no additional power past 5250!!! Your better off shifting around 5400. I wouldn't keep muscling it into gear. Your gonna break something. Maybe you put a little too much fluid back in. Try draining some (1/4qt) and see what happens

Thanks for the info 97. I appreciate it.

I took it into the Ford service center and they came back with a failing clutch. So Im dinged for $1200.00 but at least I can drive this bad boy into the oblivion now

btw, just in case anyone runs across this...

Ive recently started hear a metal tick sound after shutting off the car. The mech came back stating that it's the cat converter cooling down and this is normal on an 8 year old mustang.

Tech, $1200????!!!!!!! Dude I replaced my clutch with a SPEC stage one, and paid $238 for the clutch and $250 for labor, dude DO NOT, DO NOT DO NOT pay $1200 thats a freakin rip off and a half. order a new spec clutch (stage 1,2,3) and take it to a different shop. Ford is rippin you off.

A clutch shouldn't cost that much to replace and resurface the flywheel! Their price is for just giving you a standard duty clutch and not a HiPerf. one!!! Also, yes the exhaust noise is common. Mine does it and it's all Brand new. It sounds like TINK, if that makes any sense...lol

Ford isn't ripping him off in this case...$800+ is a common price where I live to do clutch work. I got quoted over $1,000 for a simple OEM clutch replacement.

since I didn't have the money, I did the job in my garage and slapped a bigger clutch in there...total cost was just shy of $300 since I did it all

if it was the clutch it would be hard to shift in every gear so you really f%cked up. if the problem started after you changed the atf in the trans then you probably put too much in it. when you put too much in it the gears will actually start pumping the oil much likean oil pump. this robs horsepower and makes the transmission harder to shift. if it persisted before than the friction surface on the back of your blocker rings in the synchronizer mechanism is probably worn making it harder to shift. my t45 grinds every time i shift second at 6200 rpms. o and il have to disagree on the shifting at 5200, when i used to shift at 5200 the best et i could pull is a 14.4 now when i shift at 6200 i can pretty consistently pull 13.9s.
