If you think it is the tensioner pull the serpentine belt off and fire it up for a second. But dont let it run very long because you wont have any coolant flowing. If the noise is still there its most likely inside the engine. Start at the easy stuff. I had a bearing go bad in my jeep and it sounded almost like a rod knock. I pulled the serpentine belt off fired it up and no noise. Changed the tensioner pulley and noise went away.

I checked out your videos. its been doing it since January? It might be some thing with the timing chain & with the tensioner. I would have the Dealer take a look at it.

I did that a couple months ago, I replaced the belt tensioner and belt, but the belt tensioner has absolutley nothing to do with the timing chain tensioners. I am starting to tear it down this afternoon. Enough bitching.. It's time for me to get dirty and figure it out..

01 redstang- Yeah it started right after chistmas last year. I have only driven it about 5k miles since the noise started in January.

I am pretty convinced that it is.. Check out this vid I just took.. I pulled the valve cover back and can pull the timing chain off the cam without effort.. I KNOW it shouldn't be that loose..lol

With the new evidence do you guys feel I should replace the chains too or just crack the front cover open replace the tensioners and guides and get out? How many miles are these chains good for? I have 80k on this engine...

Dude I would get that looked at. I took my heads off back in Feb. to get them reconditioned and when I put everything back together I noticed my passanger side timing chain tentioner was a little stuck and the guides where a worn as hell. Well about a week after driving the car it started making that exact same noise as your car coming from the front of the passanger side valve cover. In July my car just died on me on a highway. I got my car towed home and I just got home in October and looked at my car again and it still won't start. I went through a check list of things and now I am just taking it to a shop to have them look at it for me. My buddy just got his motor rebuilt by them for 3400 bucks so I am thinking about the same if there is a big problem. I'm hopeing there's not. Good luck man.

Your engine is making the same mine did at the same exact place. I thought it was the tentioner cause I couldnt hear it in the oil pan only on top of the engine. But guess what the oil pan is filled with oil which makes it hard to hear. I tore the engine down and every rod and main bearing was spun. Now I have a forged motor
