Default Price of a stock 98 GT Transmission

I was wondering how much a stock transmission would cost, my car is in the shop and they're fixin it and I should be gettin it back on the 15th. Now I know how lucky I am to have a mustang, (I have a POS Chevy truck for a rental) so I need to start workin on it and start eatin up some rice. I want a new transmission because mine is almost dead, and I want to have it regeared and a shift kit installed.

Auto or manual? I'm assuming auto since you mentioned a shift kit.

Just a thought so don't get on my case people. Ford has sold sooo many Mustangs in this vintage era that the bone yards (auto salvage or "junk" yards if you will) should be overflowing with trannies from all years. Usually they'll put the real good ones aside and keep them catagorized by year and mileage. I bet you can find many with under 10,000 miles on them and probably in your own backyard. This can prove ALOT cheaper than buying new or special built-up models. For that matter, a GOOD transmission rebuild shop can do wonders at a steal for price. Beware and stay away from the many "thieves" out there that just want your money and do a half *** job and/or just plain charge WAY too much. Hey, during a rebuild you can have them put in any shift kit you may want at the same time. Try this site for a shift kit: http://www.baumannengineering.com They have a good reputation and won't allow you to go WOT in 4th gear which will destroy your tranny fast. Many kits let the WOT in 4th thing happen and all hell will eventually break loose. Ford says this is a definite no-no for overdrive (4th gear) automatics.

Good luck and enjoy your ride!

WTF? Are you on crack? Or am I? I can't see how you wouldn't be at w0t in 4th... AKA at the track ????? Someone please tell me he's wrong.

P.S. Good idea in theory, but why risk it? This way you can get a modified valve body, better clutches, handle more HP, etc... for just a little more $$$.

WOT in 4th on an automatic I am talking about not a standard when you have a whole extra gear (or two). I don't think a stock AOD will even shift to 4th from 3rd at WOT unless you let up a little on the throttle. It is a safety mechanism built into the tranny by Ford. 4th gear is overdrive for cruising and not meant for racing. If you have to get to 4th all the time just to keep up, you are probably running out of gear. 4.10's and 4.30's are meant for quarter mile runs, not road racing. Probably the best overall gears for autocross and other track racing is 3.55. Won't run out of gear that way and be forced into a ridiculously poor ratio in overdrive. No power in those gears, just mush. That goes for 5th or 6th in a standard as well.

Don't take my word for it, go to www.corral.net and check out those forums. There are close to a 1,000 people online at all times. Look up MyLittleHero and see what he has to say on autos. What I am quoting about 4th gear in AOD's was just what a seasoned Ford tranny specialist told me. He actually worked for FORD themselves in developmental tranny programs.
