Default tranny swap: auto to manual?

I currently have a '96 GT AUTO. I was driving my buddy's mustang around today which is a manual and I love it. How much would swapping out the auto for a manual tranny cost? Also, can you find used manual tranny's or is it better to buy brand new parts?

Thanks guys.

most will tell you to trade yours in, but I'm doing the same. Used is ok just make sure its driveable. I am swapping with a cobra soon, I would however look around for a wrecked manual and take the parts out of that.

You guys are crazy. I would kill to have a j-modded 4r70w with a good stall converter. Awesome transmition. However if you really want a manual car, trade it in.

I have been doing some resourch bout a AT to MT swap and it does not seem to be that complex. I know of a shop here in phoenix that sells a kit for 2200 or so and it comes with everything you need to do the swap, then you can sell all you old parts and make some money back so it aint that bad of a deal. Google Amp performance they sell the kit.

its not the parts that will get you..its the labor. it is a fairly straight forward swap, if you can do it youself or with some buddies go for it. if not.. i dont think your gonna like the install fee of a shop. just my .02

Unless you have significant work done to the car or are getting a aftermarket trans at a steal (or the auto is already out) I don't see any reason why you would PAY for this.

An auto car blue books for more than a stick... sell the auto car and buy a newer car with less miles that has a stick... for the same price.

It goes X10 when you install a stock trans... the 5 speeds are simply not that great in these cars (stock). why install someting that could give you a headache?

What exactly is a shift kit + stall? Would buying these 2 be less than the swap? How much?
