P1443 Code What do i do?
P1443- Evaporative Emission Control System/Vacuum System/Purge Control Solenoid or Purge Control Valve fault.
I can not get this code to go away and stay away. I had it about a month ago, off an on for a week then on non-stop for the next 3. Undid the battery the other day while working on car, it was gone until today, 3 days later. What does it mean and what should i look for or replace to get it to stay away.

The purge control valve is near the firewall on the passenger side, two vacuum hoses and an electrical connector. It is toggled on and off by the PCM based on the flow measured. You can test whether it holds vacuum (Mity Mite hand pump) and if the solenoid works (5V will open it). The flowmeter (red and white, IIRC) isup on the passenger side firewall and has a couple of vacuum hoses attached. It is a know problem child and not an inexpensive part from your Ford partscounter.
The carbon canister might have a crack in it or a hose might be split. The canister is in the passenger wheel well (you have to remove the liner). Might smell gasoline if the crack is big enough.
The vent hose connection at the gas tank might be split, too. There's a check valve or something like that that might not be holding. There's a rubber grommet that seals the filler neck to the tank. It might be leaking but I would think that you would have a little drip during a fill-up or you'd smell gasoline.
You may have to head to the shop to have your gas tank and vent system tested with smoke to pinpoint the leak. Check the easy stuff first and when (if) you get stuck, you'll have to seek professional help. I've got my money on the flowmeter as the culprit!
