Having the crank key at 12 oclock is just fine. It is safer and easier then putting it to TDC which you would have to either remove the cams or the followers. Double check everything is lined up right. Did you remove the cams at all? Can you post a pic of the front of the engine on here?

placing a long screwdriverthrew the #1 spark plug hole will help you see when you have reached tdc that way you are for sure you are at tdc. Also if for some chance you may have tried to start the car. one or more of the valves maybebent or broken. thats unlikly if youonly turned it over by hand though?

the car was never started, only turned by hand to make sure it would spin and sure enough it doesnt. the cams have not been removed at all and the marks line up on the crank sprocket at approx 7-8 o'clock with the key in the 12 o'clock position and both marks line up with the marks on the cam sprockets... i checked sum pics on here to verify and it looks exactly the same as the ones in the timing chain replacement guides...

i'm an ex-mechanic so pretty mechanicly inclined just no experience with fords. i get half a rotation from the crank in either direction then it will just completely be unable to turn anymore. should i give removing the cams and rotating the crank 1 full turn back to 12o'clock a try? maybe its on the wrong stroke? would that cause it to lock up like that?

not sure without seeing it but can you see the camlobs opening the valves when you turn it over? if so see ifthe #1 cylindervaluesare closing all the way while the #1 cylinder is a TDCit could be somthing in one of the cylinders did you have the heads off? I had the same problem with a grand am, It ended up being a broken valve. Iv got some books im going to look at to see if anything else comes to mine.

you can see the dark links that line up with the timing marks... key is at 12 o'clock, timing mark on crank at 7-8 o'clock, and timing mark on cams at about 12 o'clock on each cam in relation to the heads
