car started a ping from engine
well start off that ive been running my timing all the way up with my sct tuner never had a problem for about a month now. filled up with gas yesterday and drove to work today no problem the on the way home i noticed at 3000 rpm I had a ping from the engine. what do you guys think is it bad gas or do i need to lower my timing. or is it something else.

Is your goal to have to walk to work??

lower it down 1 or so and drive it, see if it fixes it... i have been bumping up my timing and relying on that it doesn't ping or knock.. and what did your ping sound like not really sure what it sounds like

When you hear pinging you will know!
Was it hotter then usual yesterday after work? I would back it back down 1* at a time until you do not hear pinging anymore then back it back down 1 more degree. Detonation is not always audible so you always should go at least 1* less after no ping. Alot of tuners increase timing until they hear ping then back down 2*.

well it was hot. I got it home let it cool down then took it for a test drive no more ping. so I backed it down by one in every phase. also the ping kinda sounded like rocker arms when they are a little loose kinda.

what plugs are you running? try going a heat range colder. i had a slight ping with my timing turned up, and i put in TR6 plugs, ping never came back. this was on my old 01 cobra.

RE: car started a ping from engine
Quick question. I am considering a tuner, and i want to know why everyone always increases the timing. I for one would be paranoid to screw with it any more than what the tuner intended for that octane when they sent the tuner. I've read a lot of these threads on here, and the people who always blow there engines up or ping and knock the longevity right out of their engine (pun intended) are the people who foolishly screw around with the timing without knowing what the hell they're doing.
Is the tune that comes in the mail so week that you need to bump the timing that much? Just asking because I am considering purchasing one. Figure, on a slightly modified car (o/r H, catback, plenum, TB, K&N, it should be about a 20 HP gain.. now, as far as bolt ons go, pound for pound that is one hell of a cost/performance ratio for a non FI part at only 400 bones. Considering, you can get a midpipe, catback, plenum, tb, intake, and still not make that much HP and will have wasted over 1,000 dollars.
